Apples and Oranges

Some 350,000 volunteers came to work in Israel’s Kibbutzim during the second half of the 20th Century. Children of the ‘60s generation found in the Kibbutz everything they dreamed about: sun, communal life, a little sense of danger. The Kibbutzim enjoyed the volunteers’ youthful presence as well as the supply of free labour. Was it a win-win situation? The eventual decline of the volunteers movement is a tale of many conflicts: from politics to religion, cultural clashes and personal heartbreaks.
