We Were The Others

"We Were The Others" (HaDavka’im) will trace the lives of several aging gay men. Through their experiences, their perspectives on historical events, and their cultural milestones, the film will sketch the underground and undocumented life of the community—from the establishment of the State until 1979, the year several brave individuals went to Kings of Israel Square to protest for their rights, marking the point where the community's history began to be told and documented.

The characters are part of the "Desert Generation" of gay men: those who lived in a wasteland without meeting places or role models for identification; those who, due to a massive lack of information, did not even know the word "homosexual" existed and sincerely believed they were the only ones experiencing these "strange feelings"; those who did not understand the connection between their attraction to men and their sexual identity; and those who finally mustered the courage to organize, emerge from the darkness, and fight for their visibility. Yet, in a society that sanctifies youth, they were already too old to enjoy the fruits of their struggle.
