ESTHER

Esther Ofarim was once the voice of Israel. A global superstar of the 1960s, she shared the stage and the charts with icons like Leonard Cohen, Cher, Tom Jones, and Enrico Macias, conquering the world’s most prestigious stages before retreating into self-imposed seclusion. Now in her mid-80s, she lives in Hamburg, far from the Middle East. Her departure from Israel to Germany at the peak of her success brought international acclaim but sparked a national boycott back home.

As war rages in the homeland she left behind, a young filmmaker begins a series of late-night phone calls with the reclusive legend. Through these elusive conversations and rare archival footage, the film explores the emotional cost of exile and the vulnerability behind a performer who once seemed invincible. The film is a portrait of an artist who chose silence over the spotlight, tracing the myth of a voice that refused to be claimed as a public icon or a national treasure.
